Sutherland House is named after Sister Agnes Sutherland House, a Grey nun, who had assisted women and children fleeing violence in Fort Smith for a number of years. In the book “Challenges Galore”, Sister Agnes wrote, “with true love and determination we can overcome violence everywhere”, and “everyone of us must strive for peace, gentleness, respect, justice, honesty, and tolerance. We must never give up striving for a violence free society.” YWCA Yellowknife began operating Sutherland House on October 1, 2014 under contract with the local Health and Social services authority.
